Event Description

PB116: Nuts & Bolts of One-on-One Counseling

 Wednesday- Thursday 8:30 am-4:00pm

Friday 8:30 am-2:30pm

Course Description:

By definition, a Housing Counselor is an experienced, trained professional who can advise individuals and families on housing matters. However, some counselors are not as confident as they would like to be when facilitating a one-on-one counseling session. For some, they possess the subject-matter knowledge and know the strategies, but how do you convey that information to consumers in a counseling session? This training will explore basic counseling principles and discuss techniques on providing quality housing counseling to individuals and families in your community in a one-on-one setting. This course is designed for new counselors and serves as a refresher for the not so new counselor.

The course will cover:

  • Topics which must be covered in the session
  • Tips on feeling confident about the information you provide
  • What a successful one-on-one counseling session looks like from beginning to end
  • HUD’s expectation of a one-one-one counseling session
  • Tools and resources to help manage the session
  • Properly documenting the session in accordance with HUD’s guidelines
